An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
Goals - be a Prefect Trainee for a day - become a Prefect - read all the books in the library - train for DADA to overcome his own weakness (perhaps through duels?) - spot all constellations at least once - learn more about the lantern tree - find the golden telescope - get a golden key from a Niffler - practise potion brewing (though first finish the potions kit) - brew each potion at least once (and try them?)
Outfits Usual: hair styled up to perfection, glasses always with him, creaseless and clean clothes Always with him: notebooks, notebooks, notebooks... and other wiriting utensils - Uniform
A Carriage to Japan: - rode a carriage to Japan with my family - Dad promised me to teach me some Japanese (still unfulfilled) - rode the carriage with Martha and Mum and ate a butterscotch sweet through 'bypassing' some rules (why Mum?!) - learned about Theastrals (my parents can see them, even Mum, why?) - a Japanese Pearlfang appeared near their cariage (this was awesome! It was about... where is my notebook? [for further notes see notebook]) - Mum even gave me a notebook!
- ate at a Japanese restaurant (very interesting) - shared a room with Joshua at their holiday house (at least better than with Toby or Sam) - I woke up to Toby's shouts (what was he doing?) - then neatly folded my and Josh's blankets + added detailed notes about the dragon to his brother's piece of paper (I had to bring order into this chaos, how can my brother live with this!?) - Christmas presents: a yellow jumper, a quality telescope (I love it! Where should I try it out first?), a japanese tea leaves set and cauldron cakes from my parents (they know me well, they're the few sweets I actually eat), a box of fizzy fudge from Great-Uncle Otis (ok, and those) and a hand-stitched book sleeve from Martha (I'm already using it, it really helps keeping my notebook clean); I even hugged my parents (that never happened)
- we had breakfast made with Japanese spices (very interesting), on their way to the Museum of Magical Artefacts I caught a glimpse of a little light, which later turned out be a magical creature living in a magical tree! (that was so awesome! though why was it following me, and no one seemed to see it before me?) - at the Museum we saw various exhibitions, though the most precious was The Galaxy (it was awesome, like being in space itself! it- [the monologue goes on...]) - we drank aged root tea (very bitter, though I kind of liked it) and ate some little cakes in forms of Japanese flowers or fruits - afterwards, we went to an evening event in a secluded location, and had to change into traditional robes (why was it so hard to don those clothes?!) - at the location and table, House-Elves were there too, though wearing proper clothes, and they were bowed to! One of them even sat later at our table, and Josh gave him something to drink! - then we had to drink a sour tea and speak to the mountain and nature, sharing oir giving something to others (I chose knowledge as I want to give it everyone around me, especially my siblings!) - sadly, no creatures came to visit that night, though the Caretaker shared some words with me (I still don't get what they mean, flickering stars? An aura?)
Japan, Home, and Hogwarts: - woke up in the middle of the night to get going, though didn't sleep well, asked Masuyo questions but I didn't get an appropriate answer (have to find the meaning of the Caretaker's words on my own, I guess) - bought myself a Japanese ceramic tea cup and a feather for writing - landed at home via Portkey (too bad we couldn't have a carriage right through the night sky), barely slept again - Joshua got famous over night as he apparently sold some ear rings to Kamari Sagemore and was mentioned as the designer in a magazine (and my brother doesn't have a clue what to with it, figures) - had to rescue a little owl in the meantime On the Platform (Pre-Boarding): - tried to give advice to Joshua how to proceed with contact between him and Kamari Sagemore, it was not appreciated (even though Martha said the same thing...) Middle Compartment - A: - tried to write in my notebook about the past days, when Kody and Verity Ashworth suddenly joined my compartment (still no clue why they did, though) - Kody asked a lot of questions (actually quite good ones!), and I took the time to explain everything to him - he mentioned something about huggable trees (I'm not sure this is an actual thing...) - Verity wrote on Kody's arm (I still don't get the reason for it) - Kody mentioned me being friend-shaped, whatever that entails (I'm not convinced that this is true) - explained why I don't play Quidditch Along the Way: - went back to school with Kody and Verity - explained the importance of Potions and my plans for the afternoon - Kody proposed a experimental Potions class, I would be for it! (maybe we can do experiments together...) - Kody has plans of exploring the lake (sounds interesting, he even mentioned the Giant Squid being real! I definitely have to find out the truth!) Are Beetles home?: - searched for Beetles, need them for the Divination Extra-C - found a weird ingredient, never seen this before! some kind of fungus? (have to find out what exactly it is and what to do with it!) A reading for the future: - met the popular 6th year group (there were practising interesting spells!), though especially Natalie Shorrs to get a Tarot Card reading - luckily, I planned my spending ahead of time - got the Tower Card (something about letting emotions flow freely and giving permission for change? Yeah, right, as if I don't already do that!) - Martha joined me, got a Tarot Card reading on her own (something fitting for her, not like me) and as she wanted to share something with me, we went together to the Forest Path Follow the Beetle!: - Martha told me about a Niffler called Simon (is he a pet? who does he belong to?) and a Niffler den (I want to see it!) - then she showed me the treausre, she had gotten from them: a golden lense, like from a telescope! (to which one belongs that? I want to know!!!) - as I wanted to do the Divination Extra-C and it involved Beetles, Martha left for now - I followed my Beetle to a clearing: The Vanishing Hideout! (not that I recommend the way towards it) - I tried to make notes of everything about it, but they simply vanished (why? my precious notes! though it also is kind of interesting at the same time...) - on the clearing were a candle and three crystals, I chose the dark one, but apparently I was wrong as everything around me vanished, leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere - had to walk the whole way back (the whole exploration had been for nothing...) Unplanned Boathouse Exploration: - ended up near the Boathouse, so decided to gather ingredients - collected Blue Spider and Red Spider Eggs - Martha found me and told me she found the telescope to which the golden lens belonged! Apparently, the view through it was awesome! (I have to find out myself! As soon as possible!)
'The Tower, a Form card. Interesting.' Natalia nodded, giving Pierce a careful glance. 'It means you should allow your emotions to flow freely. Give yourself permission to experience change.'
She regarded him a moment longer, then stared at the card. Yes, that seemed to suit him really well -- though of course, Natalie had only just met him five minutes ago. She was by no means a Seer, but had a well-trained talent for Divination.
'It's okay, you know,' Natalie added, confident in the reading. 'To let go a bit. People with this card tend to have a really precise way of doing things or how they want the world to be. But always walking the same path, how will you discover something new? The emotion bit, that's up to you. Maybe try to express yourself more? If something's funny, just laugh and enjoy it, you know?'
It was a bit of a Twiggs saying. Money was a less amusing topic, but socks... those were valuable. All their favourite socks were handmade by Molly, in cool designs and the softest materials. The kids loved to show them off and compare. "Run for your socks" typically equated to how cool someone was. Sock theft in the Twiggs household was considered an unforgiveable act, or a devastating one if some simply go missing.
Only the special ones, of course. But the saying still worked.
Molly: 'Your dad is trained for these sort of situations, and he speaks some Japanese.'
'Passports?' He then checked them over, offered by Molly -- and the first the children had learned of them even having passports.
Molly smiled at her two well-behaved children, who would surely turn pale if they knew half of the trouble they got up to as toddlers. Her Prefect and no doubt future-Prefect. It was a rather ironic carriage group, as she herself at been Prefect during her time at Hogwarts.
'The drivers are quite skilled with navigation, yes.' Molly reluctantly nodded, glancing over her shoulder then sighed. 'But the driver's not the one steering. And believe me, those magnificent creatures know exactly where they are and where they're going.' Martha: 'Perhaps the same that draw the carriages at school?' 'Yes, the same winged horses that pull the school carriages,' Molly said. 'They're called Thestrals, and can only be seen by those who have witnessed death. Beautiful as they may be, your father and I are reassured that none of you kids can see them.'
It got quiet in their carriage after that, with the sad gaze in Molly's eyes clearly implying that both she and Alan could see them. In his case, unfortunately that made sense with his line of work and generally being a Ministry employee who went into the field. Molly's case was a bit more mysterious, but one they felt wasn't the right time to ask about. If they dared to at all.
Japan The Twiggs family managed to floo to Tokyo with minimal incidents, though ended up wandering the snowy and unfamiliar streets for over an hour in search of their restaurant -- made difficult by their lack of a guide, and apparently the restaurant itself was magically hidden away. As Alan delightfully discovered, Japanese wizarding folk had a different way of doing things, so it took some trial and error to figure it out.
The streets were picturesque -- cold and snowy, but beautiful. Muggles went about their festive day but somehow Japan blurred the lines a bit in being able to easily tell Muggle from Magical Folk apart. They couldn't pinpoint why.
'Our first stop is a highlight,' Masuyo proudly informed them. 'The Museum of Magical Artefacts.'
If anyone knew even some of their history, they'd recognise that name immediately. It was one of the few in the world, and a very prestigious place -- filled with relics of the earlier days of magic, inventions, discoveries, or Quidditch feats. Japan's was known to be the biggest, however. And the most protected; it was a rare gift indeed to visit such a place.
Alan walked proudly the whole way; they likely had such permission because of his status from working for the Ministry for Magic. A trusted observer, through which they could witness a special collection of magical history.
Fizzy Fudge Fizzy Fudge is a new (less than 4 years) yet very expensive wizarding treat which the Twiggs children only had the fortune of trying last Christmas. It's nearly impossible to replicate, and highlights Otis' magical baking skills that his version is still moderately close to the real thing. (Otis = Great-Uncle)
Presents Yellow knitted jumper, quality telescope with Goblin-cut glass, Japanese Tea Leaves Set (20 different flavours), and a box of Cauldron Cakes from Mum & Dad.
Then wrapped up for Pierce Twiggs was a hand-stitched book sleeve, decorated with a magical library theme. It would fit any journal quite nicely and protect it from dings and tears.
Japanese Spices ...Pierce's question about the Japanese traditional spices during breakfast, which were exclusively grown in the region. She'd barely gotten to mention how Creatures of the forests and mountains tended to certain herbs...
Museum It was one of the few in the world, and a very prestigious place -- filled with relics of the earlier days of magic, inventions, discoveries, or Quidditch feats. Japan's was known to be the biggest, however. And the most protected; it was a rare gift indeed to visit such a place.
The Galaxy It was, for all first appearances, a grassy field contained within walls -- which soon faded away into the night sky. Never had they imagined that any enchanted ceiling could truly put the Hogwarts Great Hall to shame, but this was it. Instead of a normal night sky, it was space itself. Too far to touch, but raising one's hand at a particular star or section revealed it to be interactive -- with names, distance from the Earth, and more.
As far as even Pierce knew, with his avid interest in Astronomy, the Wizarding World was not nearly as advanced in their studies of the night sky. Apparently, that was not true. There was a secretive sense to the room, as though they'd stepped into another realm. It was almost too much, but beautiful nevertheless.
There were highly-advanced, gold-rimmed telescopes and lunascopes set up on little platforms. As well as tables with single armchairs, and a few stray books -- though the Protectors present implied nothing was for them to touch. Just look.
'A bit odd for a Museum, yes?' Masuyo nodded, looking up at the impressive view. 'But what you are seeing here are not the stars of today, but those of a thousand years ago. You will have to imagine how that is possible; unfortunately, this is quite the exclusive room.'
Divination Relics mostly from Centaurs, or donated by Seers over the years. There were some about Japanese warriors who used swords in river dirt as means of Divining danger during days of conflict. If one were to drop their sword during this, it foretold their death was near.
'It is unconfirmed if that came to pass,' Masuyo added, peering at one of the swords with a chip in it -- and burned at the handle. 'Many names of such brave warriors were lost to history.'
Various Exhibitions They visited various other exhibitions, with a reoccurring appearance of Goblin-Made armours or shields -- with many unmistakable plaques noting that they belonged to Goblins (with their name clearly stated), and were kindly loaned to the Museum for an allocated amount of time.
Differing from what they were used to in the UK, the Goblin ownership of such treasures were treated with utmost respect and honour. One was even visiting his Spike-Embellished Axe, handed down by his family, with such pride to seeing a wizard admire it. The wizard spotted him and immediately bowed.
'In Japanese history,' Masuyo added, spotting the pair. 'Goblins were considered mischievous at times. Yet many arrogant youth were sent to the mountains to appease them, through hard labour. In times of conflict, the Goblins would sometimes train our warriors. Their magic is quite impressive, if a bit rough around the edges.'
Curse-Breaker She indicated to a glass case, which contained a pure silver badge -- spell-smeared and aged, but still impressive.
'This was from the first ever Curse-Breaker,' she said, admiring it despite how many times she'd seen it over the years. 'Curse-Breakers, as it so happens, originated right here in Japan. They do so without wands. In Asian cultures, and I have heard African and other cultures as well, the use of a wand to perform magic is not so common.'
It was impressive, even to Molly and Alan -- given how wandless magic in the UK was treated as one of the most difficult forms of magic, surpassed only by the complexity of non-verbal magic.
Quidditch section a wide range of Quidditch history was there for the viewing -- including historical broomsticks, much grander in design than those they were used to nowadays, and even a whole section of cracked Bludgers.
One could only imagine the horrors of the impact needed to damage a Bludger. Even an old one from days long since gone.
'Quidditch was introduced to Japan many centuries ago by a group of wayward Hogwarts students. As the saying goes, they surely lived to regret teaching us of the sport.' Masuyo said that with a smirk, looking towards a section dedicated to a long history of World Cup victories.
Anyone who followed Quidditch knew that the Japanese team was always a force to be reckoned with, and often regarded as one of the best Quidditch teams in the world. They even had patented moves, which were considered too dangerous or specialised for others to attempt. Tammy Doyle had once succeeded a signature move with minimal injuries, after a publicised visit to Japan a few years ago.
The magical tree 'Ah. Our little miracle.' Masuyo smiled fondly at the lantern tree. 'I haven't a clue what it's called. No one does. It just sprouted here one day -- and has grown then flourished since. Its home to a few magical creatures and plants that are also mysterious, but we leave them alone. This tree is, perhaps, the most protected in this entire place. We consider it the Museum's heart.' 'Very few have ever seen one of these trees, as they're incredibly ancient and can only grow in the right circumstances -- usually a place of magical learning or development,' Masuyo said. 'I'm surprised a place like Hogwarts doesn't have one? Or perhaps not one easily ventured across.'
A character who has done the Charms skill room in the Spiral Tower may, at this point, realise a similarity between this tree and the one present in that room.
House-Elves The food was all prepared, tended to by House-Elves... except, it took a double-look to realise they were indeed House-Elves.
These House-Elves were well-fed, clean, and looked quite happy to be there. They didn't wear tattered pillow cases or aged cloths like those in the UK, but rather lovely silks in a sort of toga-style. The colours or patterns seemed significant, as if to indicate who they belonged to -- though there was a crest sewn somewhere on their attire.
Adding to the cultural shock, Japanese magical folk regarded a House-Elf with respect -- often bowing and thanking them for the food the Elfs had lovingly prepared.
The Caretaker of the Sacred Mountain and its Creatures He had a wispy beard and moustache that reminded one of a waterfall, and long silvery hair tied back with vines. His eyes were kind, and his face wrinkled, yet his expression stern.
Once everyone was seated, his expression relaxed to almost tired but not to be confused with boredom. A practitioner of the traditional old ways of magic, he brandished a sort of brush in the place of a wand. Given their more wandless culture, it was surprising, but Masuyo whispered that it was because he'd had a long three days of preparations.
Masuyo spent some time telling the Twiggs about magical creatures native to the forest in the shadow of the Sacred Mountain. The caretaker at his hut at the very top of the mountain, and was the only one able to reside there. He was the protector of its nature, creatures, and of the magic Japanese believed resided in that mountain alone.
An ancient kind of magic that always enacted a price for its use, and of power others know not nor could possibly understand. The caretaker frowned at this, but remained quiet.
'They say, during these traditional dinners we hold here for guests or other occasions, some rare magical creatures may venture down from the mountain or through the forests to join us,' Masuyo continued, smiling as she looked to the darkened forest beyond the courtyard. 'There are seven aspects about a person that they're drawn to. It is said to bring fortune, should you be chosen.'
She intentionally did not explain what aspects, almost as if it was taboo or bad luck to speak it.
'First, one must be open to their guidance,' Masuyo said, pouring them each a deep green tea that smelled a bit sour to those unfamiliar with it. Some sort of Japanese herb, they could only assume. 'In our culture, we believe that a healthy mind allows for powerful magic and great potential.'
The tea was about as sour as it smelled, but in a pleasant way. Almost like sour candy, but very much herbal and healthy. Just consuming it made them warmer, and washed away any fatigue of the day.
Pierce's promise at the Japanese Night Event „I would love to be the one to help my siblings in acquiring new knowledge. Just as the stars share their light with the world, I want to illuminate the path to new insights for those around me,” Pierce solemnly proclaimed with a satisfied smile, despite being serious. But he was content with his prayer.
Important words from the Caretaker to him 'You have an aura about you,' the caretaker said, as Pierce moved to leave the table. 'They sense it. You've been visited before, haven't you? Tread carefully on your journey. The stars may lend their light, but they flicker. It's time to shine your own.'
He called Pierce something in old Japanese, which sounded like a name or title. It caused Masuyo to turn quickly at the words, though she didn't translate. With the rest of the family distracted, she bid the caretaker a very respectful good night
Unfortunately for Pierce, he never got the answers he'd sought before leaving Japan -- Masuyo had let him down gently, but wasn't able to explain it in words he'd understand. And she also said it wasn't her place to give meaning to the caretaker's view of the world. He knew magics they could barely even comprehend, and those magical creatures whispered only to him.
As a Twiggs, Joshua was familiar with art projects -- as it was a common activity growing up to keep the kids distracted. But they weren't masterpieces in the eyes of the art world, just fun freehand paintings or craft projects. Occasionally their backyard or a scene from their favourite storybook.
The most effort and skill they'd put into art was likely for Quidditch World Cup reasons; they'd often gather together to paint banners... or their faces.
Still, the act of painting was familiar to him from his childhood, and some of his repaired objects or new crafts required a fresh pain job. And masterpieces or not, his parents still kept every one of those drawings as if they were worthy of a gallery. To his parents, they were. Joshua at least had a foundation for the task ahead.
Hagrid glanced towards their company -- a Sytherin who had just arrived, no doubt after a Garden Pot as well, since there was so rarely any other reason for member of that house to seek him out. Unless Pierce Twiggs had yet another of his questions to tick off from a long list. Not that Hagrid minded, of course.
He hadn't seen Pierce around as much lately, but suspected he was still carrying his trusty notebook around and trying to discover as much as he could on his own.
